When the springs or
support system of a seat fails it creates a problem for anyone who is sitting in it. This is especially significant here in the bay area
where commutes are often long. When part
of the seat fails, one side of the pelvis drops lower than the other which forces one side
of the back to work harder to stabilize the spine. With
time and repetition, muscles become fatigued and are less effective in their role of
stabilizing our spine. Failure of this support
system means that we are more likely to injure ourselves.
The injury does not usually happen while sitting in the car, but rather
while performing a simple, unguarded movement, such as reaching over to pick something up. The fatigue and imbalance in the muscles of the
spine allow for excess motion of the spinal joints and a movement that you have done
hundreds of times before without incident now causes you a sudden, unexpected pain. Prevention is the best defense against this so make
sure you have a seat that is functioning properly. Next
time you have your car serviced make sure you ask to have your seat checked.
